Sony to Produce Wheel of Time TV Adaptation for Starz?

Sony to Produce Wheel of Time TV Adaptation for Starz?

Catchy title eh? Alas at this point in time it's just speculation on my part, but bear with me and I'll be sure to convince at least some of you that not only am I correct but that this is good news!

First lets start with what we know for sure:

The Facts:
Update: Wanted to share with you exciting news about The Wheel of Time. Legal issues have been resolved. The Wheel of Time will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn’t be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio —Harriet
1, Harriet is excited
2. Legal issues have been resolved
3. Will be a cutting edge TV series from a major studio

What we don't know is if Red Eagle Entertainment(REE), the rights holders to any WoT TV, Movie and Game rights has sold all of their rights or just the TV ones and what the details of said sale are. They Previously sold the Movie rights to Universal which entailed them being named as "Producers" and they retained the game rights for themselves.

We also don't know if Harriet in her excitement got a bit carried away by saying "Will be a cutting edge TV series", I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and hope that she isn't confusing someone buying the rights, with someone actually giving the greenlight to make the show.

Now onto the Speculation!

My Theory: Sony to Produce Wheel of Time TV Adaptation for Starz!

Sony, why Sony?

From Legal documents surrounding the slander case brought against Harriet by REE, we know that Harriet was flown out to meet with Sony regarding a TV adaptation. Sony has produced Breaking Bad and Outlander to name just two hit shows.

Now to fly Harriet out I'll assume that negotiations were fairly well advanced and I also assume that REE thought they were going to do a deal with them. That's based on the last minute rush to retain the rights when the deal didn't happen, which resulted in 'Winter Dragon'. I'll speculate that Sony wanted all the rights with no conditions and that REE were holding out for a deal similar to the one they inked with Universal.

'Winter Dragon' is released...lawsuit and counter lawsuits ensue...Sony tells Harriet, sort it out and we are still interested. Harriet tells REE to accept the deal that Sony offered or we'll drag you through the courts for years and no one will make money off the rights. REE decide a few million in the hand now is better than future bankruptcy and cave....or so I speculate(no slander lawsuits please).

Starz, why Starz?

Well Harriet did say 'Will be a cutting edge TV series', So if she isn't just over excited then that means that Sony have already done a deal to either supply the show or make it for someone.

This is what the Starz CEO said in relation to Outlander(produced by Sony)
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht later said that he had greenlighted several genre projects, including Outlander, in an effort to shift the network's new series development toward "audiences that were being underserved" and shows that would "drive a real fervent fan base that then becomes the kind of advocacy group for the shows themselves"
Hello??? Is there a bigger untapped book series out there than The Wheel of Time? I don't think so! The Wheel of Time would be just what they are looking for...'fervent fan base'? Hell yeah!

So would a Sony Starz alliance be good match for The Wheel of Time? The budget for the first season of Outlander was huge(Game of Thrones Huge) and it was 16 episodes long. Hopefully a WoT show will have a similar budget and season length. As for production values, well Outlander might not match 'Game of Thrones' but it comes damn close.

Starz has a subscriber base of 30 million in the USA. Outlanders first eight episodes averaged 5 million viewers and is a big hit for them. IMO the Outlander audience will easily crossover to a WoT show if the writers get it right. There could also be savings to be made if they Film the show in the UK along side Outlander.

I personally couldn't think or wish for a better fit.

So that's my theory! Agree, disagree? Let me know!
